As wedding photographers in Detroit, Michigan, we always help our wedding clients with itinerary planning, especially since we know the local wedding venues so well. When it comes to itinerary planning, the number one question we get asked is, “Should I do a first look on my wedding day?”
Some people are old fashioned and choose not to see each other at all before their wedding ceremony. We totally get this! It’s old-school and romantic. If you’re sticking to this tradition, more power to you. However, we always encourage our wedding clients to at least consider a first look! We LOVE first looks. Not only are they incredibly beautiful and intimate, but it also opens your itinerary on the wedding day and gives you more time for your wedding photography.
I know that some brides and grooms love the idea of the walk down the aisle being the first time they see each other on the wedding day, but many ceremonies are not until 4:30-5:30 in the evening. That’s a long time to wait to see your fiance on a day that’s all about you two! First looks take place in the afternoon, much earlier in the day, which gives you much more time together on your wedding day.
Not only that, but first looks are usually just you, your fiance, and your photographer (who you won’t even know is there – trust me!). First looks are so romantic and intimate, just the two of you, and you have a beautiful moment together before all the craziness of the day begins.
A first look doesn’t have to be restricted to just bride and groom! We’ve seen first looks between a bride and her father or grandfather as well and those are just as sweet. You’ll treasure those images for years to come, because it allows you to have a brief emotional moment with the people you love most, without feeling the pressure of your time constraints.
Couples who do a first look always have FAR more time for wedding photography than those who choose not to have one. They can travel to their preferred locations, have a relaxed bride and groom portrait session, and take all their bridal party pictures… all before the ceremony starts! The more you can stretch out your timeline, the less stressed and rushed you’ll be in the evening. You’ll have enough to do on your wedding day!
So if you’re wondering, “should I do a first look on my wedding day?” ultimately it’s up to you, but if you asked our opinion, we’d say DEFINITELY YES!
